Ask Joe:  Your Benefits Guru

July 2026

Dear Joe,

When I retire from the Army, will my wife and I get free TSA PreCheck on flights? I currently use the DOD ID number on my CAC as the known traveler number. We are hoping to do some traveling after retirement.

Sincerely,

Frequent Traveler

Dear Traveler,

Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including National Guard and Reserve, cadets and midshipmen of the service academies, and DOD Federal civilians are the only categories eligible for free TSA PreCheck benefits. The reason given by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is that former service members, military spouses, and other groups, do not undergo “periodic reinvestigations” and are therefore not part of their partnership with DOD. Military spouses are not eligible, whether the service member is currently serving or retired. The good news is that anyone who is eligible can apply for TSA PreCheck.

Happy travels!

Joe

Dear Joe,

We just went on a vacation to the Hale Koa Hotel through the Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRCs) and had an amazing time. We are starting to think about another vacation for next summer, but by then I will be retired. Can we still use the resorts even if I’m retired? We’d like to go to Shades of Green or Edelweiss Lodge and Resort.

Thanks,

Disney or Germany

Dear Disney or Germany,

Glad to hear you enjoyed the Hale Koa Hotel. To answer your question, yes, you can still visit/use any of the hotels or resorts in the AFRC after you retire. These resorts, along with other MWR programs and services, are available to service members of any status. Hope you have a great time on your next trip, whether it’s Disney or Germany.

Best,

Joe
