Ask Joe: Your Benefits Guru
August 2026
Dear Joe,
My daughter leaves for college in the next few weeks and is currently covered by TRICARE. I want to make sure she continues to be covered even though she is moving out of state for school. Is there anything I need to do?
Help,
College bound
Dear College bound,
What an exciting, and possibly stressful, time for your family. TRICARE allows coverage of a dependent until their 23rd birthday, graduation day, or a change from full-time enrollment, whichever is first. Your daughter must have a “student status” in DEERS, a letter stating her full-time status at an accredited college, and proof that you are providing more than half of her financial support. This information needs to be provided at an ID card facility. To learn more about what you’ll need to do and what plans are available for coverage, visit the TRICARE College page (https://tricare.mil/LifeEvents/College).
Best,
Joe
Dear Joe,
I’ve been retired long enough so that my spouse’s retired military ID is expiring and needs to be renewed. We have moved since we got our initial retired IDs and no longer live near an Army installation. We do live near a Naval base. Can we go to the ID card office of a different service to get our ID card renewed?
Renewal Needed
Dear Renewal,
Yes, you can certainly get your retired military ID card renewed at the ID card office on any military installation, regardless of service affiliation, including National Guard and Reserve facilities. You may also request USID Card renewals online through the IDCO, see information at: https://www.cac.mil/Next-Generation-Uniformed-Services-ID-Card/Renewing-Online/. To find military installations close to you, look up your state in the MyArmyBenefits Resource Locator (https://myarmybenefits.us.army.mil/Benefit-Library/Resource-Locator), where you will find a list of Army installations and links to information about installations of other services located in your state.
